Breakfast + Lunch = Brunch

 

         It seems so simple. When most people think of brunch, they thinking of sleeping in, breaking bread with friends, and starting their day with a mid-day meal that has a minor identity crisis...but brunch is so much more than that.

 

         When you look at brunch with an analytical eye, it becomes so much more than just a delicious combination of breakfast and lunch. In this analyisis of brunch, we will first look at the origins of brunch to gain a better understanding of when this cultural phenomena came about.  Then, we will tighten the scope and look at brunch in Charlottesville, VA

 

         Charlottesville is the perfect place to do a cultural study on brunch. It is home to numerous demographics ranging from young families, to college students, to retirees and everything in-between. Within these age demographics, there are various types of income, religious faiths, social habits and cultural beliefs. Each demographic, when used as it's own analytical lens regarding brunch, can give considerable amounts of insight into the lives of the subjects being studied.

 

         For example, why is one brunch spot more popular with young families than it is with college students? Why does one restaurant bring in a larger percentage of church-goers than it does people without religious identity? How does the cost of eating at one restaurant inadvertantly (or possibly, intentionally) define the customer base?

 

         We will explore these questions by putting the spotlight on two different Charlottesville, VA brunch spots: Beer Run and Bluegrass Grill, two locations that offer very different perspectives on brunch culture today.
